I happened to look absent-mindedly at a CD
of Budgie, and I happened to read the song title "Panzer Division
Destroyed", and suddenly it occurred to me how ludicrous those words
sound.
Now, I understand perfectly that it's just
a song, and songs don't need to have anything to do with reality, and Budgie is
still a great band, and I don't respect them any less because of that song
title. It's just that I began to wonder how many German tanks did the Western
allies actually destroy during WW2. Was it more than 100 or less? I wouldn't
risk a bet either way. I tried to find the information but couldn't. In any
case, the idea of the Western allies destroying a whole panzer division sounds
ridiculous.
It was the Russians who defeated Nazi
Germany. The contribution of other nations was too small to make a difference.
Nonwithstanding the stupidity of the Soviet military tactics and the genocide
in conquered areas and the American weapons and equipment supplies, it was
still the Russians who actually faced the German soldiers and shot at them,
year after year, while the British and American cowards' participation in the
war in Europe was essentially limited to terror bombardments of German
civilians.
